CIICA UPDATE: 9 OCTOBER 2022
MORE RESOURCES AND DATA FOR YOU
LEARNING FROM YOUNG PEOPLE WITH CI
INSPIRING EACH OTHER TO ADVOCACY

“This has really made me think how I can inspire other young poeple to speak out.”

Our inspiring session on the opportunities and challenges for young people, led by Bowen Tang, CI User, and President of the International Federation of Hard of Hearing Young People, gave young CI users from around the globe the opportunity to share their experiences about the challenges and opportunities at home, school, higher education and work and look to the future.

How do they manage their cognitive load? How do you manage the boss? What changes do they want in the technology and their services for the future?  How do they advocate?
Thanks to all those who were inspired to join us after the event- send us your news!
Have a look at https://ciicanet.org/events/ciica-live-young-people-with-ci/ for the presentations; pdfs and captioned videos available. DO USE THEM!

Euro Trak Reports
Low Awareness of CI in Germany and France; data for advocacy
Euro Trak reports, established by EHIMA to survey countries about hearing aid useage and awareness, have recently included useful questions on CI awareness.
Have a look at the reports on Germany and France and see how little awareness there is even there of cochlear implantation. For example in Germany:

69% of the population in Germany have never heard of Cochlear Implants.

Only 18% of the HA owners with severe/profound HL have been informed about CIs by a medical professional.

This is unacceptable – Go to https://www.ehima.com/surveys/  for the detail and use it in your advocacy work!

RESOURCES FOR TEACHERS OF THE DEAF MANAGING LISTENING EFFORT

Helen Willis, in our Young People’s CIICA LIVE event, spoke about Listening and Cognitive Effort and what we know from neuroscience to help manage this.
The British Association of Teachers of the Deaf provide a number of helpful resources on their website and among these are some from Helen: if you go to https://www.batod.org.uk/  you will find many resources which are useful in school and for parents. If you go to  https://www.batod.org.uk/going-for-gold-a-resource-for-empowering-deaf-children-with-cochlear-implants-to-manage-listening-effort/ you will find two resources from Helen: one for children and one for adults.

Going for Gold: a resource to empower deaf children  (adults) with cochlear implants to manage listening effort.

IFHOH WORLD CONGRESS IN BUDAPEST
A WORLD WITHOUT BARRIERS
CIICA WAS THERE!

After 12 years as President, Ruth Warick of Canada handed over the Presidency to Avi Blau of Israel, during IFHOH’s exciting World Congress in Budapest.  Dr Shelly Chadha, leader of the great Ear and Hearing Care initiatives at WHO, inspired us from the start of the Congress about why it is so important that we all advocate for better services globally for those with hearing loss. The figures are stark:

“430 Million need hearing services
only 17% have access to interventions. “

Dr Chadha urged us to Raise Demand and Improve Supply

At the meeting Dr Adam Kosa with Ruth Warick and Avi Blau launched the Budapest Declaration recognising Auracast, the new Blue Tooth Techology with its Implications for Hard of Hearing Persons. IFHOH’s new policy on CI was also launched, an important moment.

Ear and hearing care for all! Let’s make it a reality.
The key messages for WHD 2023 are:

1. Ear and hearing problems are among the most common problems encountered in the community.
2. Over 60% of these can be identified and addressed at the primary level of care.
3. Integration of ear and hearing care into primary care services is possible through training and capacity building at this level.
4. Such integration will benefit people and help countries move towards the goal of universal health coverage.
The WHD 2023 will mark the launch of:
The Primary ear and hearing care training manual for health workers and doctors. The manual will be accompanied with trainer’s handbook and other community resources.More information on the campaign is available on the WHO website.  Edit-able formats are available upon request by writing to whf@who.int  Start preparing your action now!
